What is the title of your work?
spring Spirit rebirth
what inspired yoour final project? where did the ideas come from?
a family story that took place during the dawing of spring. i took a look at how all the budding trees and flowers would peak from the ground
how does this piece connect to your own personal story, or to the story of your family, or to the story of your community or culture?
the story goes as so, when my great grandma had passed, we had the funeral in spring. a time where ladybugs were apparent, one just so happened to fall from the high church ceiling and lived. my great aunt placed it on the coffin and my family believes her spirit lives through ladybugs. each time we see a ladybug we think its her checking up on us. they come back every spring we've had ladybug imagery and objects in our house ever since.
what are some of the images used in your artwork? how do you connect these images?
The large blue ladybug themself represent my grandma, the colours being pale and ghostly. as well as its placement on the white lily, a very common flower for funerals which represents death. the other two flowers are modeled after tulips, some of my family's favourite as well as ones that come back each year.
what materials did you choose to use to create your work? how do these materials relate to the ideas you are working with?
the clay was simular to the kind we used as kids when we would visit her home on occasion. i felt it was nice to be feeling like i was back there modeling clay.
as for the liquid in the "vase" i wanted it to smell sweet like flowers that have just bloomed. so it was scented and coloured for a greater effect.
what do you hope the audience understands when looking at your artwork? what is this piece about for you?
i cant expect them to know the full story when seeing the piece, so i think i want them to wonder when seeing the blue ladybug and inquire about it for full context. for me, i feel this is a small rememberance of my grandma year round since these flowers and ladybugs wont leave for winter.
do you feel like this piece was successful? how do you know?
It certainly tested my patience with the breakings, spills and stubbornness of the materials, however i was able to get a piece im ok with. so i consider that a success in some aspects.
what mark would you give yourself our of 10 on creativity
